According to an estimate more than 1.2 crore people suffer from blindness due to one or other reason. Out of these approximately 30 to 49 lac suffer due to corneal disease. Cornea is a transparent membrane in front of black round part of eye and it helps in focusing image at retina. This is how we see.
There are many reasons like malnutrition, injury, infection or hereditary cause which may damage cornea and may lead to blindness. Such patients may be able to regain vision after cornea transplant from eye donors. Cornea can be removed from eyes after death and can be grafted to needy person.
Cornea must be removed within 4 to 6 hours after death and can be transplanted up to 3 days.2 persons can be benefitted from single donor.
In India about 49 lac people majority of them being children suffer from corneal blindness and can be benefitted from cornea transplant but the present collection from all over India is 37103 in year 2009-2010(source: Eye Bank association of India EBAI).

You can fill the pledge form along with your family members and submit at nearby eye bank.
What you can do when someone passes away?
- Inform the nearest eye bank within 6-8 hrs. of donors death.
- Switch off fans (Keep A/C on).
- Place a piece of wet clean cotton or cloth on the closed eyes of the donor.
- Raise head with a pillow.
- Keep the death certificate ready.
- Remember 10cc of blood sample will be collected from the donor for testing.

Facts about Eye Donation
- Eyes can be donated only after death.
- Each eye donation helps two people to see.
- Age or poor sight does not affect eye donation. Even if one has had a cataract surgery or any other eye surgery, his/ her eyes can be donated.
- Eyes for donation must be removed within six hours of death. Contact the Eye Bank nearest to you immediately. The doctor will attend at the earliest and the eyes will be removed in the house within 10-15 minutes.
- There will be no disfigurement of the face of the deceased.
- Eyes can be donated even if the deceased has not formally pledged his/ her eyes, as long as he has not voiced any objection to it during his life.
- After removal, the eyes are taken to the Eye Bank, analyzed and preserved. The cornea is transplanted within 72 hours, at the latest.
- Open discussion about eye donation with his/ her family is necessary if a person wishes to donate their eyes. They must take responsibility for fulfilling his/ her wish upon their demise.
- Commitment to the cause of eye donation can be made by filling in a pledge form.
- Active responsibility should be taken by all members of the public for motivating family, friends and neighbors to donate eyes, whenever a death takes place in their circle.
